ORDINARY LIVES REACHING DIFFERENT DIMENSIONS

Talking with a friend about movies made me remember scenes from classical Japanese movies. I didn’t expect to be exchanging opinions with somebody about Ozu Yasujiro’s movies and, in general, Japanese cinema in the 1950es. I remembered some characters and the atmospheres portrayed. I kind of liked the aura of simplicity that transcended the story, as well, as some kind of beauty that scented the daily lives of the characters. I wonder if the same stories, filmed in western culture settings would have been the same. I don’t really think so.


Then, these days the media talk about Tokyo Kazoku (東京家) in cinemas. This modern film, by Yamada Yoji, was described as a remake, very positively by many critics (and not so positively by others, obviously). It all made me think again about the feelings mentioned above. Even though the action takes place in modern Tokyo, I do believe there’s still something that can reminds us of the atmospheres and characters in the classical Ozu movies. I sort of idealise the 1950es simplicity in general because, from today’s perspective, people seemed to give a different value to things and to other people. True... Societies  back then were much more conservative, but there are many precious things beyond conservative-liberal values (much more beyond prejudices, inequality, discrimination, etc.) which are hard to find nowadays in the way we treat things and people. Those old movies brought always to my mind the expression “物持ちがいい (ものもちがいい, mono mochi ga ii), which refers to handling and keeping something carefully.  I’d say that there’s some of it to be found in the film by Yamada...but there’ll be for sure a lot that reminds us of rush-throw when useless-replace-violence-shallowness coming from the younger characters and the westernization since the context is radically different. Would Ozu have kept the essence of his films if he was to film something nowadays? What a hypothesis. I guess I’ll end up watching Tokyo Kazoku...

WANDERING ASHES

This week I watched the movie "The Way", with Martin Sheen, about the Camino de Santiago. I had no expectations about the movie and happened to like it. Both the story and characters were interesting. It made me remember the feelings I had when we travelled with my mother's ashes some years ago (Oct.1958-July 2006). It was a journey by car and it did feel as if we were 3 instead of 2 people there and there was some kind of worrying when we left the car to have some rest or to get something to eat and the ashes remained there.

Somebody's ashes are a mere physical embodiment of the memory of the deceased person...but once the ashes are placed somewhere else and are no longer with us, the presence of the dead one seems to change and expand itself. That one who left this world seems to be wherever we go. That subjective presence becomes a source of protection, solace, strength, replacing, sooner or later, sadness and mourning.

LUCES SINGULARES

Suelo ir siguiendo las entrevistas y tertulias del programa Singulars (canal 33), normalmente en sus repeticiones en miércoles y sábados. Las buenas elecciones de los invitados así como el estilo del director y conductor del programa, Jaume Barberà (hace no mucho publicó un libro relacionado con el programa), acaban creando cierta adicción. quizá sea por la esperanza y la sabiduría que arrojan ciertas palabras, ciertos argumentos, ciertas maneras de expresarse. Ya pueden ser temas científicos, filosóficos o relacionados con la economía o la política.

Una de las últimas entrevistas fue al catedrático de filosofía y académico de la RAE Emilio Lledó (Sevilla, 1927). La grandeza de sus sencillas y diáfanas palabras parecía dar cobijo ante el dolor de ver y padecer los tiempos que corren. Hablando desde una gran modestia y humildad iban enlazándose temas trascendentales, mundanos y cotidianos y resultaba bien difícil apartarse de la pantalla. Afortunados somos de que aún quede gente así (el propio Barberà le dio las gracias a Lledó por existir al final de la entrevista) y es esperanzador y valioso que siga habiendo interés en recordar la importancia de la dignidad, la sencillez, el respeto, la educación (en todos sus sentidos) y el conocimiento de tiempos pasados, de grandes personajes y el erigirse como persona autónoma y responsable por encima de ideologías y sectarismos.

SÈRIES MEDICINALS

Ben bona que és la comèdia per la salut!! Com sol passar-me, casualment vaig descobrir una sèrie còmica que realment val la pena. En els darrers anys costa trobar bones comèdies, d'aquelles amb un guió bo i uns personatges ben elaborats i interpretats, tant per la península com arreu. I les que es poden trobar, sovint anaven perdent gas a mesura que avançaven les temporades (per exemple, The Big Bang Theory....les 2 darreres temporades continuen essent bones però els gags i situacions còmiques s'han anant encasellant).

A LA PENÍNSULA....

Potser la darrera sèrie d'aquelles de poder riure molt va ser "Plats Bruts" (TV3), de la que ja fa força temps. Ja feia, però, molt de temps que no segueixo cap sèrie peninsular (ni drama, ni comèdia, ni intriga) pels horaris i llargs descansos publicitaris. Bé, tampoc en mirava cap per internet. Una excepció va ser "Crematorio" (única temporada de 8 capítols), molt ben feta. Com em sol passar, casualment vaig topar amb una cosa estupenda: "Senyor Retor" (Canal 9, Ràdio TV Valenciana). Posteriorment vaig saber que la versió original era gallega ("Padre Casares"), que n'hi havia una versió balear ("Mossèn Capellà", IB3) i una d'andalusa ("Padre Medina"). Havia vist, sense saber-ho, algun tros d'algun capítol de la balear...i posteriorment he fet algunes comparacions de versions. Decididament preferixo la valenciana...que fa poc ha encetat la segona temporada.

El guió molt bo (bona adaptació respecte a l'original gallec) i tot plegat millorat respecte a "Padre Casares". La tria dels actors, fantàstica, així com la manera com fan les interpretacions. Tots tenen un punt que fa difícil triar els preferits. Tot i així, dels més grans és l'intèrpret de Don Cosme, el capellà antic (el personatge té molta més gràcia que en cap altra versió). I també l'alcalde (Batiste), Ximo, Montse (dona de l'alcalde). Hi ha personatges que es fan estimar, com el d'Amèlia. El personatge de la beata del poble, amiguíssima de la dona de l'alcalde (Elisa a "Senyor Retor") és també molt més creïble que a d'altres versions i té també més gràcia. I què dir del prota? ben interpretat, creïble....tot elogis.

Plastic brain, rubber brain...

I recently heard, in Eduard Punset’s TV program Redes, about the ability of the brain to adapt, to change its structure whenever something new is learn, no matter how old we are. It might be a bit more difficult to learn new things when we get old but yet we can learn new thing....great! there’s so much to learn and there can be so many possible paths to take in life...
Find or come across-learn-adapt....and another change or something else new comes.
We often underestimate our capabilities and don’t take advantage of all our possibilities. Rationally it seems very easy to improve oneself, as well as to solve emotional problems (there were also some interesting reports and interviews to scholars studying consequences and solutions to some emotional problems)...but there’s always something seemingly making us become passive and somehow silly and lazy.
I feel sad when I think of Spanish society nowadays. I feel effort and willingness to improve oneself is rarely praised or seen as something important. Not so long ago it wasn’t this way... Also, patience and perseverance were seen as necessary to get something, to succeed and thus to be admired. Having so many facilities and resources has, too often, made us become lazier instead of better. It’s so easy to get used to easier things....and instead of being more efficient and better we seldom fill the time we gain doing something to improve ourselves....how often do we just sit in front of TV?...So easy to fall into idleness.... Being idle from time to time is good and even healthy....but aiming idleness might turn us into passive beings wasting time, precious time....Precious specially knowing the wide range of possibilities we have.

GOOD FOR THE LUNGS

My physiotherapist told me that laughing is good for my lungs (doing some exercises for my lungs at the hospital made me laugh....don’t ask me why). So...why not trying out some comedies?? Comedies should be prescript, together with apples (by the way, why on earth didn’t they give me ANY apple with meals during my 6-day long stay at the hospital????)...an apple a day keeps the doctor away, is said. Anyway. Once at home (still sort of imprisoned for 2 weeks, wearing a mask and not able to go out) I discovered some tv series, among which there were some good comedies. The great discoveries were a couple of sitcoms: The IT crowd (British) and then The Big Bang Theory (American). How great are the characters of Moss (IT crowd) and Sheldon (Big Bang Theory)!...in fact they’re pretty similar...but one deals with computers and the other one with theoretic physics....WAH...how many memorable quotes and situations!!!. Moss-sheldonian formulae for the lungs...a good remedy after the sitcom The Nanny (old one, with Fran Drescher) was removed from TV, with its great dubbing into Catalan language (made the series funnier than the original version, I’d say)

whirl, whirl, whirl...


How long had I waited for this movie?? How many months? It was summer when I discovered Bab 'Aziz but had to wait until I could go to see it. On 7th March it was finally possible to watch it...but didn't go then. Waited. Something told me it was not the moment. Then the first afternoon session faded away the following week (living outside Barcelona it was a bit too late to go for the second/last session). But last week...again the early afternoon session...and at another cinema, in the centre of the city.

And I wasn't at all deceived (sometimes it happens when we expect lots from something or after waiting for a long time for something we want). Wonderful words, great music, incredible images. And then comes the creative side of the one who watch the mo
vie, especially in the case of films like Bab 'Aziz. It's not just a story to see, to follow. The film continued (and continues) after leaving the cinema. Part of the melody of one of the songs kept in my mind and danced around my steps and my eyes.

A blind person across the desert. Would we really need our eyes to go across a desert?

I found and created so many metaphors...I was lucky to have been reading about Ibn' Arabi and Farid Ud-din Attar and their works. If i hadn't I might have never been so interested in that movie. The circle is drawn: some texts in
Bab 'Aziz come from the works by those sufi wise men (some other are from works by Jalal al-din Rumi, and other great figures)

The street looked so different after the film. It was cold but it wasn't cold. The movie had stepped out of the screen and wandered around, outside, not far from the path I followed and follow.

A few days ago I had been exchanging a few words about Sufism with Arief, but just a few words, as a proto-discussion via email (will continue? I'm interested in your point of view). it was when I felt I had lost the chance to watch this film. The self, God...

And then, soon afterwards, came the movie....or did I walk toward it??

La Cosmopolitan, Cinema turc dels 1980es, i aplicacions

Dünyayı kurtaran adam o la Cosmopolitan (edició en anglès)?...aparentment distants fins que un dia, fa ja temps se m’acudí fer-li un cop d’ull a la Cosmopolitan. Ai, quin riure...gairebé com mirant Dünyayı kurtaran adam. I en els cops d’ull reincidents a Dünyayı kurtaran adam i la cosmo persisteixen les rialles. Recentment he tornat a entrar a la plana de la revista i han canviat l’aparença...uaaa!!! continuen posant allò del “guy without shirt/shirtless sweetheart” (hahaha) o anàlegs...que més aviat em fa riure amb aquella posició gens natural. Cap dels “Ken” de la cosmo és el meu tipus. Bé, a algú li deu agradar perquè si no, malament per la Cosmopolitan.
Bé, però la novetat és una mena d’agenda: daily cosmo amb daily horoscope, la frase de saviesa ancestral (estil: “Women are perceived as the most attractive when they're ovulating. (iii, doncs??) Researchers theorize that the hormones associated with ovulation give your skin an extrasexy glow midcycle”, absolutament essencial...on arribaràs a la vida si no ho saps...ai! malament!) i coses tipus consells del dia (pots comptar-hi). Una altra millora és que tot es veu com més compactat i els menús estan com més endreçats per allà i hi ha com dibuixets escampats per allà (tipus postura de la setmana). Uaa...però no hi ha allò del “men menu” (hahaha)....clar, que els homes (bé nois tipus Ken que personalment em provoquen una mena de riure i pena...) quedaven com coses-objectes (i sap greu)...com si es parlés d’una bossa o un vestit (clar que els anuncis de cotxes amb noies eren molt pitjors...i moltes coses més denigrants s’han fet afectant la dona). I em pregunto sobre qui llegeix SERIOSAMENT (o compra) la cosmopolitan???? Per mi és un remei per dies feixucs, com les escenes de Dünyayı kurtaran adam, però res de prendre-me-la seriosament...bé, alguna cosa sí pot ser aprofitable. No he mirat les altres versions; la nordamericana (original) ja fa prou riure. Uf...literatura...quin vocabulari! Amb grans adjectius com “flirtatious”. Diria que les traduccions perden molt, com passa sempre amb llibres, pel·lícules i d’altres. Com Dünyayı kurtaran adam...exactament...els grans subtítols...però és menester escoltar les veus parlant turc. Ah! quan el gran Cüneyt va dient “katana” a Son Savaşçı (1982), mentre sosté una mena d’espasa de cartró allà, lluint-se amb la seva saviesa davant de la Rossa de Dünyayi (Füsun Uçar) com “hohoho mira quantes coses sé i mira que bé que llueixo els pantalons blancs!”. De fet, el lligam entre aquest tipus de cinema turc i la cosmo es pot estretar si fa no fa encara més. Sí!!! Es complementen: les relacions/interacció rossa-de-Dünyayı kurtaran adam + Murat així com rossa-de-Dünyayı kurtaran adam + Cüneyt a Son Savaşçı s’HAURIEN d’analitzar seguint els paràmetres comopolitans i podrien il·lustrar la secció de body language.

I a la vida real una servidora podria extreure conclusions cosmopolitanes del comportament d’un cert individu (el del poema) –això ho dic mentre m’ajusto les ulleres fent un gest seriós, que queda com professional—. La manera de tocar-se el cinturó, els somriures estranys, les mirades sinuoses (potser no eren tan sinuoses)o que es quedaven allà com més penjades que un pentium II atrotinat (i jo reiniciava retirant la mirada perquè m’incomodava, com sol passar)...aquelles expressions facials que no tenen preu (mastercardianes). Li hauria d’haver donat una katana turca de cartró en comptes de la piruleta amb forma de cor...per tal que es passegés lluint-se estil Cüneyt a Son Savaşçı. Ara va la cosmo i ho analitza científicament. Hahaha. Toca’t el cinturó again, Joe .

you (too) are part of some Turkish movies

What I’m writing here is a homage to several Turkish movies from the 70es and 80es some consider trash cinema. They’re avant-garde and show a high do-it-yourself abilities and a good management of resources (see the golden gloves used in Dünyayı kurtaran adam (1982), by the sci-fi hero MuratCüneyt Arkın, the great, of course- then being used in Son savaşçi (1982) by one of the ninja.

When you watch the movie you’re creating it too. There’s place left for the imagination of the viewer/the one enjoying the movie. Simple items become symbols, something sophisticated if you want. You identify all objects, unlike in modern movies full of expensive special effects.Turkish actors in the 70es and 80es must have been happy since they could play plenty of different roles, even within a year. For example, Cüneyt the great, in 1982, in a couple of movies directed by Çetin Inanç, was a sci-fi hero who had to save the world (actually he didn’t save it since there was a second part of the movie, dünyayi kurtaran adamın oğlu in 2006, not directed by Çetin Inanç –oh- but by Kartal Tibet, where Murat again had to face many enemies to save the world)...and in Son savaşçi he was a rather modern hero who could fight against Turkish ninja (I say Turkish ninja because they’re not old-school ninja since they’re dressed uhm...how to say...differently and their swords aren’t katana but some kind of Arabic-style swords –I don’t know how to describe them- made of cardboard –but I heard Cüneyt’s character pronouncing “katana” as he was holding and trying one!!!). Then, another example is dünyayı kurtaran adam’s blonde (Füsun Uçar) and I’m quite sure that some of the nice monsters in Dünyayı kurtaran adam became ninja...or the supposedly-scary monster in Ölüm savasçisi (1984) (also known as Death Warrior).

and I’d choose the second one. Neither have I seen superman movies but I’ve seen some parts of the Turkish version (Süpermen dönüyor, 1979)...again the Turkish version wins.

These Turkish movies are kind of more human and not so violent (you see that when they hit each other they DON’T hit each other...and they don’t hit the rocks or stones, as is the case of Murat’s training sessions in Dünyayı kurtaran adam and actually, most weapons are made of cardboard, including the huge ninja stars, also used in Dünyayı kurtaran adam, of course). Seeing these films makes you feel that you too can be a hero, a sci-fi character, a ninja, a monster who demands hugs (they are like toys...ooooh...the nice red hairy monsters in Dünyayı kurtaran adam)...and above all, they have a great sense of humour. Any comedy made me laugh as much as these Turkish film.
Some facts to bear in mind:

-superman’s glasses. Where did they find them???? Pay attention to his shoes, making him even taller...strangely taller wearing those bell-bottomed trousers. I like the Olivetti typewriter in the movie
-if you have an old lovely-junk car, moskovitch, seat supermirafiori or whatever...don’t forget to have a look at the boot! There might be a man (...or a ninja; the scene would have been even better if it had been a ninja...)




-the enemies drive slowly in süpermen dönüyor and ninja move strangely.
-you can’t expect the way the stories go and end.... Ninja and ballet dancer beneath the sea and an oyster in Son savaşçi (?!) golden brain and swords in Dünyayı kurtaran adam (?!)
-stones are like dynamite. Don’t throw stones as they might explode.

-heroes MUST jump and Cüneyt is the Master. He was 45 when he starred Dünyayı kurtaran adam and Son savaşçi and most time he’s jumping, fighting and doing acrobatic shows. Well, Cüneyt is not human! Uhm..by the way, Cüneyt Arkın had studied medicine (...and Çetin Inanç, Law)



-sci-fi characters can wear fashionable 80es clothes and accessories, including silver colour headbands. Cüneyt’s Murat still wears the light blue eighties-style sweater in 2006.

-X-Mas decoration can be used to make your own galaxy (see süpermen dönüyor)
-there will be always some comment to add....

fa un dünyayı?

Inesperadament, Dünyayı kurtaran adam, grandíiiissim film de 1982. Avui q estava d’aniversari...mira. Ara només queda escoltar “hani” de Neco...clar, que no tinc gaire relació amb Turquia. Bé, la qüestió es que vaig rebre una visita i vam acabar parlant de Dünyayi kurtaran adam....ooh!!! Cüneyt Arkın (CÜNEYT THE GREAT), grandíssim actor de les Turquies...fent de Murat, amb les pedres, aquells rostres d’esforç extrem...Murat coratjóssss!. I he acabat el dia plorant de riure i contagiant el riure via Dünyayi k. a.....i no són poques les vegades que he vist escenes de la pel·lícula....AH! no, no l’he vist sencera encara...la tinc amb subtítols en anglès i en francès (les qualitats són diferents)...Hi ha molt de text als subtítols però les imatges despisten, tan impactants....no, no puc concentrar-me si estan sortint els abominables monstres vermells de peluix (noooo! No els tallis el cap, Murat! pobrissons, encara que facin aquelles veus guturals estil coco-de-sota-dels-llits) amb gestos entre barrio-sésamo-frankenstein-gossos de peluix amb ulls verds que venen als carrer...que m’entra el riure i els discursos del dolent-dolentíssim (quin figura també), amb molt de suc, queden a un segon pla. Primer hom s’ha d’acostumar a les escenes. Sí, he de veure la pel·lícula i més ara que he descobert que s’hi fa referència a l’Alcorà....Què en deurien dir a una pel·lícula de ciència ficció...que no és ni ciència ni ficció....(!). Ai...com no m’havia recordat abans dels grans herois turcs de 1982 avui que una servidora feia el 25 anys (25 anys com dünyayi kurtaran adam...quin honor!!!)....i tots ens sumàvem al quart de segle...neco, dünyayı i d’altres històries. Bé, Neco cantant “hani” (on?) (nerdeeee hani, hani, haniiiiiii!) i la mateixa dünyayi kurtaran adam es mereixen una entrada pròpia.

Belgrade calling

Esdeveniment misteriós és Eurovisió. Si bé avui dia no té gaire gràcia...perquè jo la gràcia li veig a poder escoltar cançons en idiomes diversos i amb influències diferents (bé...estan les excepcions balcàniques dels darrers anys, en menor o major mesura)..i el clima polític és diferent ara que representa que som més europeus (bé...està el misteri de si tornarà a participar el Marroc -tots som Europa!-, que sols prengué part en la cosa eurovisiva el 1980 amb Samira Bensaïd, o si Europa arribarà al Kazakhstan o a Mongòlia) Arran d'haver retrobat per una carpeta al PC “merci cherie” d’Udo Jürgens (representant a Àustria el 1966) he acabat investigant sobre les aventures eurovisives dels iugoslaus (no adherits al Pacte de Varsòvia i per tant amb el "privilegi" de poder prendre part a la cosa eurovisiva, des del 1961) i el festival de 1966 mateix...Peculiar: el britànic amb la seva faldilla escocesa -llàstima del blanc i negre- (“a man without love”, de Kenneth McKellar) i la representant iugoslava, Berta Ambrož (1944-2003), eslovena, cantant en eslovè (“brez besed” = sense paraules). Ai, Iugoslàvia de Tito...dictadures a eurovisió...però a Serrat el 1968 no el van deixar cantar en català....que l'havia escrit i composat ell el tema i la versió original era en català...en fi, la història és coneguda (i no calen comparacions amb Massiel que ni l'havia escrit ni composat). Després està la finlandesa alegre (Ann-Christine Nyström amb “Playboy”) i Raphael de les Espanyes. I la gran curiositat, la gran errada de les votacions del jurat espanyol (refia-te’n dels jurats eurovisius...a més), que encetaren les votacions pels 5 punts (hehe...i s’escoltava gent fent xivarri-rient)...portugal cinq points (ai...les ganes de donar-li els 5 punts a la cançó portuguesa (els 3 vots anaren cap a Noruega –noruega cantant en norueg, clar- i el punt cap a Àustria). Eren senzilles les votacions i en un tres i no res tots quedaven votats i cap a casa. Tornant a Iugoslàvia...Belgrade calling. Al jurat iugoslau els agradà el “yo soy aquél” de Raphael...per que gaires motivacions per donar-li un vot a les Espanyes franquistes, com que no sé pas. Jo crec que a radiotelevisiónespañola es van alegrar del vot iugoslau i de fet van convidar a la gran Berta Ambrož a que cantés amb Raphael (ves a saber què)...però com que no podia tornar a sortir del país o quelcom per l’estil. Sona com a llegenda urbana.

Feliços els qui renten els seus vestits… (Apocalipsi (22,14)
Ahir vaig llegir sobre el rellotge que suposadament indica el temps que li queda a la Terra.
Vaig recordar-me de les rebaixes, el soylent green, la cosa nuclear emergent que ens mostra els seus ullals, Kim Jong Il, la Xina, els magnats russos....els mongols allà al mig, futures proves nuclears festives (oh que bé!), el videoclip de “dancing with tears in my eyes”, d’Ultravox....i una escena de “happiness” (pel.lícula no vista) de Todd Solondz. Tot amanit amb programes de premsa del cor, ben nutritius i tot el panem et circenses.

Apa...set segells (versions modernes o postmodernes de temps d'internet i demés) i silenci. Ves a saber si el silenci aquell de mitja hora (Apocalipsi, 8,1) no és com una primera mitja hora després d'una queixalada d'una explosió nuclear que se'ns mengi gairebé a tots. (deixant de banda visites de Déu). Mentrestant anem fent ús del temps en rebaixes, uns en corrupteles, d'altres en insults, d'altres en obtenir tota mena de productes de luxe. I jo m'estava lamentant per qüestions existencials pròpies com si haguessin d'importar o fer cap servei. Primer món consentit que et trenques...ai! Soylent Green i les rebaixes

Uuuh....ens apropem als temps de soylent green. Si hom va a la secció de roba rebaixada d’un Bershka pot percebre com seria l’actitud humana en un proper temps de cerca del soylent green. Quina por. No sé, l’altre dia, fent una mica de temps, vaig entrar a un Bershka i feia por la part de rebaixes, en especial on estaven tots els jerseis rebregats i barrejats. La postguerra...Les guerres són a les tardes de divendres i dissabte. Uaaa...la roba rebaixada com a soylent green gairebé....volent robaaaaaaaah la gent!!! Ens hi trobarem...món esparracat. Quina llàstima.

Here is a cut from "Alphaville"(1965) by J.L. Godard . I found it when i was looking for some (kitsch) videoclip of some song by Alphaville...Such things happen. Something waits for us. Something that doesn't want to be looked for. Something wants to meet us accidentally...having some certain aim.



Today i tried to see if i could find some scene of a certain dialogue in "Hiroshima mon amour"(1959) by A. Resnais ...or "On connaît la chanson" (1997), also by A. Resnais...i wasn't lucky. I shouldn't have looked for them in order to find the Something waiting for me.

John Wayne, Genghis Khan and the last days

After having watched several western movies, telling all kind of stories, with different settings, I got surprised by one precious western: The Shootist” http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0075213/ (1976, D. Siegel ). There’s always some risk to come across precious unexpected things. I started to watch it thinking “let’s watch Mr. Wayne’s last movie”. But it ended up being a movie to add to my list of favourite films. After having seen THE movie, I looked for some information and there were more things to come.

John Wayne (playing the role of John Bernard Books), Lauren Bacall and an unknown actor, who happened to become a famous movie director (“a beautiful mind”, “the da vinci code”, yes, Ron Howard is the young Gillom, the son of Bacall’s role of Mrs. Rogers, the guy who admires Mr. Books)...ah, and the horse Ole Dollor, as Ole Dollor. All of them in a film that seems too short but actually isn’t.

Mr. Books and John Wayne are both in the shootist” in their last scenes, both of them because of stomach cancer, not a typical subject to appear in western movies. No more movies with John Wayne, no more John B. Books in any other movie because Mr. Wayne wouldn’t play him again. It’s said that the cause of such disease in Mr. Wayne dates back to the mid fifties, when he took part in the movie the conqueror http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0049092/ (1956, in Spanish it was translated to “el conquistador de Mongolia), a bad movie (well, it could be useful to see how distorted images of Mongolians and Genghis Khan could be), filmed somewhere in Utah were previously some nuclear tests had taken place (actually there’s some controversy about all this). In that movie John Wayne played the role of the Mongolian leader, not easy to believe, but in fact nowadays most movies are worse than this one may be.

I would have never said that there was some link between John Wayne, Genghis Khan and last days. Neither would I have thought of linking John Bernard Books and Mr. Kanji Watanabe (Shimura Takashi’s role in ikiru”, http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0044741/ 1952, , Kurosawa) and their attitude in the last days. That ability to transcend the screen, transcend expressions, all the silly things we and the characters in movies worry about. Something in the way they uttered words and what they said transcended the screen and shake our contemporary silliness vigorously, our pretensions to be superior thanks to a progress that is taking our society a bit backwards, our belief in permanence and pseudo-eternities. Meanwhile, Ole Dollor ran away, weeping. Ole Dollor keeps running across minds. Ole Dollor will keep running and one day will become a winged creature.

anant al BAFF

ai...per fi aquest any sí es donen en el meu cas les circumstàncies per anar a alguns passis de pel.lícules del BAFF (Barcelona Asian Film Festival)....després d'anys que bé els horaris, bé el fet d'haver d'anar sola em feien enrere. oh que bonic, el meu primer BAFF. Demà dissabte ja ens arrepleguem uns quants per anar a veure una mena de documental sobre el Bhutan, gran país, i un gran oblidat al màster, pobrissó. I la setmana vinent un film japonès però tractant sobre Corea del Nord. Digueu-nos frikis, però frikis positius i motivats, defensors dels oblidats. I això perque no hi ha films de Mongòlia, de països de l'Àsia Central (que se'n sap del cinema Kirguís, per posar un exemple???), de Corea del Nord, de Laos, de Brunei...No estaria malament crear una mena d'associació o agrupació estil amics dels països que normalment són oblidats, per promocionar-los. Potser l'anar a veure aquestes dues pel.lícules, i d'alguna altra, ens inspira definitivament.

buckling and blow-up

Right now, suddenly, i started thinking of something my friend Arief, javanese engineer, used to tell me about: sandwich pannels and their buckling (engineer's proselitism...sandwich pannels, finite element and Richard Feynman in the case of this friend of mine). Thin core, thick core, different buckling...how wonderful (i stil keep that paper you sent me!!but i keep the badly printed version) Something is indeed happening inside me to think about such things now, on a tuesday morning. I also buckle....my soul buckles. it might have the same structure of some sandwich pannel...who knows...nobody has seen souls. But i feel my soul is buckling since yesterday. Assaulted by deformities of all kinds, i accept them and love their inner beauty. deformed reality, deformed ear, deformed soul-structure, deformed strength and words, and voices.
Movies, coincidences and songs save me and prevent that buckling from being irreversible, cronical. Listening to Alphaville and Missing Persons (both from the 80es)...coming across songs i'd have never imagined they existed. Then, Blow up by Antonioni is the movie i'm waiting to watch. The way i got to know it dates back....uhm...a couple of years ago. it was in an article about Serge Gainsbourg (nothing to do with "blow up")...and Jane Birkin...or was it an article about Jane Birkin in which S. Gainsbourg appeared? Anyway...that Antonioni's movie was mentioned. Other elements to be related with that movie had introduced themselves before or were to introduce themselves later.. hi! i'm X or Y element!. Julio Cortázar is one of these early elements. He's been and is still is one of my favourite writers and one of his short stories was part of the inspiration for "Blow up" ("las babas del diablo", which i haven't read). The late elements were Herbie Hancock (soundrack), by whom i have heard some strange song named like an ex- boyfriend of mine (weird!)..and year 1966 (the year of that movie), with so many songs that have trapped me in the past (together with songs from the early eighties). All elements walk towards each other in my mind, and there's "blow up" embracing all of them. Ah! and there's also some deformity in the movie...in the way the main character perceives the art of photography. Imagining a movie...here i am imagining a movie. It's like with love...imagining but having no expectations, to avoid another buckling. And i play je t'aime moi non plus mentally...or i listen to it.

C.O.N.T.R.O.L. mourns...K.A.O.S. too, probably

Last Sunday (but i didn't hear the news until today) Don Adams passed away (13th April 1923 -25th September 2005) . Maybe he's not very well known for most readers of this blog...but at least, those living in Catalunya have more chances than those in the rest of Spain (except for Castilla y León) to know who he was since the series "Get Smart" is, since over a week, back on tv (as "superagent 86"). I had the chance to watch it again last summer in a regional tv channel from Castilla y León (Canal 4 Castilla y León), with the original dubbing into spanish, with some kind of southamerican accent (in spanish, the title is "superagente 86")

I've always liked the series and today i was surprised and sad to know the starring actor had died. Not so long ago i had looked for more information about "get smart" on the net,
after seeing the series was back. I wouldn't have expected then to get such sad news today. Now it feels different to watch the series...
Characters and series don't die and will keep among us some actors and actresses worth to be remembered, some actors and actresses, like Don Adams, without whom some characters and stories wouldn't have been possible. Agent 86 can't be imagined in any other way now but interpreted by Adams...the same with 99, and with the Chief. Those who have Canal 33 tv channel are lucky ones, being able to watch once more this series (i don't know whether it's still on Canal 4 Castilla y León...), sometimes, depending on the chapter, able to watch the original voices, but always with the option of an excellent dubbing.
I have no doubt that many people of different generations will remember Don Adams and his Agent 86 role. Better than other words, it's to watch some chapters. All are good, all full of intelligent humour and parodies, surrounded by the aesthetics of the 60es.
